Federal arms ended epidemic in Slovakia after 11 days!

Dunajská Streda, Slowakei - On April 7, 2025, the use of the "Austrian Forces Relief Unit" (Afdru) in Slovakia, which devoted itself to combating the mouth and claw disease (MKS), ended prematurely after eleven days. The mission was originally scheduled for a period of 21 days on March 26. The early demolition took place because the Slovak authorities did not require any further support, said the press officer Horst Langerböck. This decision brought a pleasant turn into the situation in the Dunajská Streda region, near the Hungarian border.

A total of 53 soldiers were deployed to support the local emergency services in order to slow down the expansion of the plague. During the mission, the soldiers made remarkable progress and decontaminated 6,400 large vehicles. About 25,000 liters of chemistry and 250,000 liters of water were used for this.

The main task of the AFDRU was the decontamination of vehicles on the border crossing Rajka between Hungary and Slovakia. The soldiers worked in shift work around the clock and were able to clean up to 25 vehicles an hour. With a consumption of around 1,000 liters of water and 100 liters of chemicals per hour, they showed efficiency and commitment in their work. Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner thanked the soldiers for their indispensable commitment and said they had made a decisive contribution to slowing down the expansion of the epidemic.

After completing the operation, the soldiers are on the way back to their home base in the ABC defense center in Korneuburg. There you will wait for your device and prepare for future missions. The use of the AFDRU was activated and co-financed as part of the EU disaster protection procedure, which underlines international cooperation in crisis situations.

The Afdru is a special unit of the Austrian army that specializes in disaster relief operations, technical help, decontamination measures and humanitarian support. Their commitment shows the willingness and ability to react immediately to challenges that can occur in different regions.

5min.at reports that the soldiers are returned in Korneuburg late on Monday afternoon, while the operational measures in Slovakia were successfully completed. This represents a further successful use of the AFDRU overall, which illustrates the importance of military support in civilian crisis situations.

krone.at added that the soldiers contributed significantly to security in the region during their commitment and the local authorities strongly supported. A clear sign of solidarity in times of need that also reflects the values of the EU.

ots.at emphasizes that the soldiers used tireless efforts and their professionalism made a significant contribution to the containment of the MKS.
