Strike in Germany: Thuringia is spared by medical strikes!

From Wednesday, January 13, 2025, Germany -wide strikes begin at municipal clinics by the Marburger Bund. However, Thuringia remains unaffected by these strikes. Henning Haslbeck, head of state of the Marburg federal government in Thuringia, confirmed that there is no strike in the region. Only the Greiz Hospital in Thuringia is directly affected by the tariff conflict.

In the neighboring federal states of Bavaria and Hesse, however, numerous clinics are affected by the strikes. The union has generally concluded emergency service agreements with the clinics concerned. The association of municipal employers has made an offer with a salary plus of 5.5 percent, which the collective bargaining commission of the Marburg federal government has rejected as inadequate. The Marburger Bund calls for 60,000 doctors nationwide a salary increase of 8.5 percent and a reform of the shift work regulations. As early as December, more than 90 percent of the union members voted for a strike.

background of the strike measures

As part of the negotiations on the collective agreement TV-Härt/VKA, a coordination of a possible industrial action was carried out. The large collective bargaining commission of the Marburg Association then decided to initiate no serious negotiations, since the VKA is accused. The employer offer does not include a linear increase for the first nine months and provides for a one -off payment of 500 euros from the inflation compensation flat rate. Furthermore, planned revenue increases of 2 percent from April 1, 2025, another 2 percent in April 2026 and 1.5 percent from December 1, 2026 are scheduled. This results in an average annual increase of around 1.3 percent over 30 months.

However, the offer misses structural improvements, in particular regulations for shift work. In addition, the VKA plans an increase in the night surcharge by 5 percentage points from April 2025. The Marburg federal government criticizes the lack of willingness of the VKA to improve the offer. The Hospital Supply Barrass Act (KHVVVG) also enables refinancing tariff increases. The strike begins on January 15, 2025 and could bring possible impairments for patients. In order to rule out threats to patients, emergency service agreements should be made. Information and support for strikers are provided via the website and a messenger service.
