Mother under suspicion after terrible meat grinder accident!
The trial against the mother of a two-year-old daughter was scheduled to begin on March 27, 2025, as a result of a serious accident with a meat grinder. However, the defendant did not appear at the hearing. Her lawyer informed the court that the family had permanently returned to Syria, resulting in the trial being postponed indefinitely. The judge is currently examining the mother's whereabouts.
The accident occurred on February 2, 2025 in Vienna-Ottakring. The affected child, a two-and-a-half-year-old girl, was preparing minced meat with her mother. While the mother briefly left the room, the child activated the meat grinder, which was switched off but still connected to the power grid. An acquaintance of the mother, who was in the living room, was unable to intervene in time because she lost consciousness. As a result, the girl lost her left hand, which required amputation after specialists removed the device's funnel at the hospital.
Charge of gross neglect
The public prosecutor accuses the mother of gross neglect of her duty of care. She is charged with neglect of minors with serious long-term consequences. According to the prosecution, the mother not only had to turn off the meat grinder, but also disconnect it from the electricity. If found guilty, she could face a prison sentence of six months to five years.
The case raises fundamental questions about child protection, which are also addressed within the framework of the Federal Child Protection Act in Germany. This law, which came into force in 2012, aims to improve active child protection and strengthen those involved in child protection work, including parents, doctors and youth welfare offices. Particular emphasis is placed on prevention and intervention in order to identify and avoid risks to children at an early stage. Challenges such as this case highlight the need to continually evaluate and improve child protection standards to prevent similar tragedies.
The legal consequences and the discussion surrounding the accident will continue to be followed closely, while the legal clarifications in the mother's case remain open.
Reporting on the incident and the legal consequences was carried out by, among others vienna.at and vol.at published.
In summary, it can be said that the case not only addresses the responsibility of parents but also the relevance of protective measures in child-rearing, as demonstrated by the Federal Child Protection Act should be strengthened.
