A tragic child abuse has recently occurred in Vienna. The newborn girl Linaya, only nine weeks old, fights for her survival after serious injuries. These were found after the parents brought the baby to the hospital with a seizure on May 28th. During the examination, the doctors discovered many serious injuries, which are probably due to shaking trauma. The police were immediately involved due to the suspicion of child abuse.

The parents, a 35-year-old German and a 38-year-old Croatian, were then arrested. On May 30th, a court decided that they had to remain in custody until at least June 13th. During the hearing, the mother explained stressful information against the father, who has already finished several criminal records and a three -year prison sentence in the Stein prison. Among other things, the reasons for detention found for the father are suspected of having committed the crime, as well as the risk of escape and darkening attempts. The mother also found a suspected act and risk of blackout. Both parents waived appeals.

According to police crime statistics in 2024, 3,609 cases of child abuse were registered, although the number of unreported cases is probably much higher. Many people believe that violence is often not displayed in the family, so that children, as in the case of Linaya, often have to live in dangerous conditions. As a rule, it is primarily toddlers that are victims of such acts. Often the perpetrators, who often come from all social classes, lack help to deal with overwhelming situations.

The magistrate department 11 (MA 11) has already taken care of the care via Linaya and examines legal steps to the reliable future of the child if it recovered from his serious injuries. In addition, the court officially applied for the MA 11. So far there have been no known abnormalities among the parents, which also makes the situation complicated. Linaya has no siblings, but in this case child and youth welfare must also act as a contact for the hospital in which the baby continues to be treated.

This case is particularly tragic because the parents state that Linaya’s serious injuries were caused by an alleged fall of her five -year -old sister. However, this explanation was classified as unlikely by further medical examinations. In a somewhat similar case in the past year, the parents of another infant had to custody due to serious injuries. This indicates that the risk of abuse in such conditions cannot be ignored.

The authorities are obliged to strictly examine such cases and to protect the children concerned. Linaya’s case is just an example of the gruesome reality that many children have to experience in their own home.
