Lebanon: Ceasefire negotiations between Hezbollah and USA-Israel

Hezbollah is considering a proposal for a ceasefire from the US and Israel, sources told CNN. This comes as part of intensive diplomatic efforts to end the conflict between Israel and the Lebanese military group.

Details of the proposal

On Thursday evening, U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Lisa Johnson conveyed the Lebanese government's proposal, according to a Lebanese official familiar with the talks. The proposal, presented by Johnson to the President of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri - a politician close to Hezbollah - is the first submitted by the US and Israel since a temporary ceasefire negotiated in late September. However, those efforts were interrupted when Israel killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in a large-scale bombing raid in Beirut's southern suburbs.

Political support and optimism

Another Lebanese official familiar with the ceasefire negotiations told CNN that US President-elect Donald Trump supports the ongoing negotiations. These will be led by Amos Hochstein, the Biden administration's special envoy to Lebanon. The Lebanese government is “optimistic” that Hezbollah will agree to the terms of the proposal. Authorities expect to file an official response to the latest proposal next Monday. “Diplomatic efforts are now in full swing,” the source said.

Objectives of the ceasefire

The proposal aims to achieve a 60-day cessation of hostilities and is presented as the basis for a permanent ceasefire. According to the official, the conditions are within the framework of UN Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 Lebanon-Israel war. This resolution stipulates that the only armed groups in the area south of the Litani River should be the Lebanese army and UN peacekeeping forces.

Implementation and other points

"The points mainly focus on the implementation mechanisms and the role of the Lebanese Armed Forces in the implementation of Resolution 1701 in the south of the Litani River," the official explained, adding that smuggling routes through the country's international borders will also be addressed.

The US Embassy in Beirut declined to comment on the ceasefire negotiations when contacted by CNN for comment.
