On May 14, 2025, the Austrian sports landscape will report several exciting developments. In addition to sporting events, there is also news from the world of digital sports. An outstanding example is the introduction of Austria's first official VR tennis league, which started on May 5, 2025. This league, known as VRAC (Virtual Reality Austrian Championship), is organized by ÖTV, LAOLA1, Tennis Esports and MXR Sports in collaboration. The big live finale is scheduled for June 25, 2025 at the LAOLA1 office in Vienna. The grand prize for the winners is a flight and hotel to the WTEC finals in Las Vegas, which will take place on September 10, 2025.

Future trends in sports
Developments in sport also show that European sports leagues are changing. Digitalization in particular will become more important in 2024. Streaming services are seeing strong customer growth as fans want to watch games regardless of their location. VPNs are increasingly being used to bypass geo-restrictions on live streams. Additionally, the use of wearable technology and real-time data analytics is emerging to better monitor athlete performance.
Another important trend concerns sustainability in sport. Pressure on clubs to reduce their environmental footprint is growing. Initiatives to reduce plastic waste and promote recycling, for example by introducing reusable cups in stadiums, are being pushed forward. Women's football is also experiencing an upswing, leading to increasing media and sponsor attention. Professionalization in this area is increasing and more clubs are offering the same standard of training as for men. At the same time, the issue of financial fairness in sport continues to be discussed by experts as foreign investors become increasingly involved in the Premier League and Serie A.
The merger of traditional sports and e-sports is also becoming more and more discussed, which is highlighted by the establishment of e-sports as an independent league in some European countries as well as crossover events.
This mix of classic and digital sports formats could have a decisive influence on the future of sports.
