Bolsonaro's protest: Thousands support him in the election fraud trial
The former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro took part in a public demonstration in Sao Paulo on Sunday to protest his ongoing trial at the Supreme Court in Brazil.
Demonstration on Paulista Avenue
A few thousand people gathered on Avenida Paulista, one of the city's central locations. Bolsonaro previously described the event as “an act for freedom and justice.”
Legal disputes and allegations
Bolsonaro and 33 of his allies are facing trial over one alleged plan to overthrow the election results of the 2022 presidential election. They are charged with five counts related to this scheme.
Political persecution or justified accusation?
The former president denies the allegations and claims he is the target of political persecution. If convicted, he could receive up to 12 years in prison.
Protesters demand Bolsonaro's return
“Bolsonaro, come back!” the demonstrators shouted, even though the former president is barred from taking office until 2030. Brazil's Supreme Electoral Court ruled last year that he abused his political power and made baseless claims about the country's electronic voting system.
