Dramatic rescue: Climber falls ten meters into Monte Brento!

On Monday, April 1, 2025, a serious incident occurred in Trentino's Sarca Valley, when a 33-year-old climber fell about ten meters on Monte Brento, sustaining serious injuries, particularly to his legs. His 40-year-old companion immediately alerted the Trentino Alpine Rescue Service. This rescue operation lasted for eleven hours and presented the rescuers with major challenges.

The emergency call center was quickly alerted and a helicopter was requested. However, strong wind conditions made the situation more difficult, so that the helicopter could not reach the people climbing. Meanwhile, the climbers rappelled down two pitches to reach a more stable area of the wall, which was ultimately crucial to their continued protection.

Complex rescue operation

The mountain rescue team worked for several hours before several climbing specialists and a paramedic were finally able to reach the injured climber. Due to the adverse weather conditions, an evacuation by helicopter was impossible until 7 p.m., so the rescuers had to wait. Ultimately, the injured climber was taken to a hospital in Trento, while his companion remained unharmed.

Although accidents in mountain sports are common, the mountain accident statistics from the German Alpine Club (DAV) for 2021 show a 25% decrease in accidents and emergencies compared to the previous year. The total number of accidents among DAV members was 669, which is a low. In particular, the most common cause of accidents is falls while hiking, which were reported in 310 cases, with 17 of these incidents resulting in death.

Review of accident statistics

The data from the mountain accident statistics also shows that only 32 members died in 2021 - this is the lowest number since recording began. Falls while climbing via ferrata have also decreased, showing that increased safety is being achieved in mountain sports. However, there are challenges associated with climate change as it could impact future mountain sports activities by increasing hazards such as falling rocks and ice and making touring more difficult.

The positive developments in safety in mountain sports should not reduce the focus on the necessary caution and preparation for mountain tours. This was particularly evident in the recent rescue operation in Trentino's Sarca Valley, which highlighted the importance of professional help and the right actions in critical moments.
