Trump threatens: Hell will break loose without the release of hostages!
The tense negotiations over the release of hostages in the Gaza conflict are facing a decisive turning point. While US President Trump emphasized in a press conference that Israel was ultimately in control of the situation and implied that there would be dire consequences if the remaining hostages were not released, the militant Islamist Hamas has postponed the next hostage negotiation indefinitely. This led to massively increased pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to free the hostages still in custody, while Defense Minister Israel Katz put the military on high alert, as the Vienna reports.
Military withdrawal and hostage staging
The Israeli army has made a desolate withdrawal from a strategically important section of the Gaza Strip, the Netzarim Corridor, following the release of more Hamas hostages, including the extremely emaciated Eli Sharabi. This withdrawal has sparked outrage in Israel because when the hostages were released, they were reportedly paraded by hooded Hamas fighters and forced to thank them. President Izchak Herzog denounced this production as “cynical and cruel.” ND currently states.
In total, 16 of 33 hostages have been released since the ceasefire began. This still critical situation is exacerbated by the emotional stress on the relatives and the government is perceived as hesitant. More hostages are expected to be freed in the next few days, while Israel has simultaneously released 183 Palestinian prisoners. Talks over a possible ceasefire extension continue in Qatar, where Israeli delegations are pushing for an agreement to free the remaining 76 hostages and bring about a final peace.
Amid this blockade, Hamas officials criticize Israel for undermining the agreements and using "dirty tricks" as political pressure and public security concerns mount in Israel, such as the army's recent deployment in the West Bank. The brutal circumstances of the hostage reservation cast a shadow over the negotiations so far and show the urgency with which we must work towards an early solution.
