Power outages in Cuba: Another blackout in Havana!
It's dark in Cuba! Millions of people are now suffering from serious power outages for the second day in a row. In the capital Havana, only 19 percent of electrical connections have been reactivated so far. This alarming blackout, triggered by a fault at a substation on Friday evening, is the fourth nationwide outage in just five months, according to the news platform Small newspaper reported. And as the temperatures rise, many Cubans cannot find a way out of their misery - cell phones are being charged on the street as soon as a power outlet is available. Finding ice to preserve food has become a daily challenge for many.
The situation is alarming: according to the state electricity provider UNE, only around 970 megawatts are currently available, which represents less than a third of normal electricity demand during peak periods Daily Mirror reported. The island's aging infrastructure is in a dilapidated state; Power plants fail again and again and have to be repaired under extreme conditions. These constant outages have become the norm for Cubans. The government attributes the current crisis to the US trade embargo that has existed for more than 60 years, which severely restricts oil deliveries in particular and further exacerbates the already tense situation.
