Oscar Piastri wins the Chinese GP, McLaren goes 1-2 with Norris
Oscar Piastri won the Chinese Grand Prix on Sunday in a dominant Run for McLaren, while his teammate Lando Norris took second place.
Piastri's superior performance
Piastri started the race from pole position and put in a consistently convincing performance, leading almost the entire race in Shanghai and eventually having a lead of almost 10 seconds over Norris.
McLaren's winning streak
It is Piastri's third Grand Prix victory in his Formula 1 career and cements McLaren's position as season favorites to knock four-time world champions Red Bull out of first place in the Drivers' Championship.
Fight for second place
The two McLaren drivers were clearly the fastest in China. Piastri maintained his lead throughout the race, apart from the time for a pit stop, and easily overcame any challenge that could jeopardize his lead.
Reactions after the race
“It was an incredible weekend, the car was really strong,” said the 23-year-old after the race. "It was a surprise today how different the tires behaved. It feels like I deserved it from last week."
"I'm very, very happy, just, yes, very happy. The hard tire was a lot better than everyone expected, so it was a bit of a surprise that we lasted until the end, but a pleasant surprise."
McLaren remains in the title fight
This result means McLaren has won both races so far this season, after Norris took first place in Australia last week.
Norris is fighting in second position
The race wasn't easy for Norris, however, as he struggled with braking problems and had to fend off a strong push from Mercedes driver George Russell to defend his second place. Russell finished the race in third place behind Norris and was over five seconds ahead of reigning champion Max Verstappen.
“The start was what I had hoped for, but then George overtook me in the pits,” said Norris after the race. "I was a little nervous, but we were better in the second stint. Oscar drove well, he deserved the win. I'm happy with second place, it's good points and also great for the team with a 1-2."
"(The brake pedal) was my worst nightmare, I lost two, three, four seconds in the last two laps. It was scary, but we made it to the end."
Hamilton's return to the top rankings
Lewis Hamilton, the celebrated his first win for Ferrari on Saturday, finished the race in sixth place, while his teammate Charles Leclerc finished fifth.
Drivers' Championship: An exciting race
The result means Norris remains at the top of the Drivers' Championship after two races and is now eight points ahead of Verstappen. With his win, Piastri jumps to fourth place and is now 10 points behind Norris.
If the first two races of the new season are any indicator, it could be a thrilling battle for the Drivers' Championship title this year.
Tribute to Eddie Jordan
Before the race, honors were given for Eddie Jordan, the former team owner who gave seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher his F1 debut. Jordan had died earlier in the week.
