Russian attack on bus in Sumy: Nine dead, Ukraine reports

A Russian drone strike on a bus in northeastern Ukraine killed at least nine people and injured seven others on Saturday, Ukrainian officials reported. This came just hours after the first direct peace talks between the two countries in three years.

Continued attacks after peace talks

While the two sides discussed a possible meeting between the two countries' leaders, a ceasefire and a prisoner exchange, there was no significant breakthrough and Russian airstrikes have continued since then.

Drone attack in the city of Bilopillia

The drone attack occurred on Saturday morning in the town of Bilopillia in the Sumy region, local authorities said. Oleh Hrihorov, the head of Sumy's military administration, reported that seven people were injured, three of them in critical condition.

Russia is accused of attacking civilian targets

“This is not just another shelling – it is a cynical war crime,” the National Police of Ukraine said on Telegram. Police and local authorities indicated that Russia had hit a civilian target.

Reactions to the attack

Moscow has not yet responded to Ukrainian claims that a civilian bus was hit. However, at the same time, Russian news agency TASS reported, citing a Defense Ministry statement, that Russian forces had used drones to attack a Ukrainian equipment depot in the Sumy region.

Mutual accusations and civilian victims

Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of targeting civilians, something both sides deny.

Shocking images and further losses

An image shared by the National Police of Ukraine showed a badly damaged van with huge holes on the right and top side of the back seat. The windows and windshield were broken.

In total, at least 13 people have been killed and over 38 injured in Russian attacks in Ukraine in the past 24 hours, including the attack in Sumy. Two people were killed in the Donetsk region and one death each in the Kharkiv and Kherson regions.

First peace talks since the start of the war

Friday's talks marked the first face-to-face meeting between the two sides since the early weeks of the war. However, the meeting, held in Istanbul and chaired by Turkey, was not attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who originally proposed the talks, but sent a junior delegation. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also stayed away, saying he would not meet any Russian official other than Putin.

Russian demands and international reactions

During the talks, Russia demanded that Ukraine cede territories still under Kiev's control. A source familiar with the negotiations told CNN that Ukraine has long rejected this position. The leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Poland described Russian demands in the talks as “unacceptable.”
