In a shocking night for the New Year, New Orleans experienced a devastating assassination attempt in which a van raced through a celebrating crowd on the Bourbon Street. The alleged perpetrator, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old US veteran with connections to the terrorist organization ISIS, drove into the crowd at 3:15 a.m. and killed at least 15 people while injuring more than 35 more. In a dramatic turn, Jabbar finally lost his life when he was in a change of shooting with the police after climbing the vehicle and opened the fire. According to report the New York Times he used a security gap to overcome and enter the access locks.

Brutal violence was documented by social media and videos that recorded the terrible moments. US President Joe Biden commented on the tragedy and emphasized the inadmissibility of violence and the need to protect all communities from such attacks. Louisiana’s governor Jeff Landry also explained the state of emergency for Orleans Parish to mobilize additional resources for the upcoming major events.
