A shocking knife attack took place on July 19, 2024 in a parking lot at the adult education center (VHS) in Wedel, in which 67-year-old teacher Hisham A. was seriously injured. The perpetrator stabbed him several times in the neck and back, but fortunately his life was not in danger. The city of Wedel reacted quickly and developed a comprehensive security concept to avoid similar incidents in the future. Around six months after the attack, a silent alarm system and de-escalation training were introduced to increase the feeling of security at the VHS. The city administration has set up the “Safety and Respect” working group to identify potential danger locations and implement safety strategies. This includes, among other things, the storage of dangerous items such as knives and scissors in locked cabinets as well as planned training for staff to raise awareness in crisis situations.
The security measures will be gradually implemented throughout the city's facilities and cost estimates for cameras are already available. These increased security measures are part of an effort to restore trust in public education while the four alleged perpetrators are in custody awaiting trial.
