On the night of Friday, December 20th, a serious pile-up occurred on the A3 near Schlüsselfeld, in which seven vehicles were involved in an accident. Two children, aged five and 13, were also involved in this horrific incident. The events occurred in a construction site area, which made it even more difficult for rescue workers to arrive.

A total of 130 emergency services were on site, including a rescue helicopter, to transport the injured to nearby clinics. The highway had to be closed in both directions due to the rescue work. The difficulties the emergency services had in reaching the scene of the accident were compounded by a traffic jam that formed and stretched over four and a half kilometers. The clean-up work lasted until the early hours of the morning and the highway was expected to reopen from 8:15 a.m., according to current information. Another serious incident on the A3 occurred recently when from BR.de reports a 52-year-old and a two-year-old child died in a similar collision that was blamed on distracted drivers.

The head of operations for the Bavarian Red Cross described the scenes as chaotic and traumatizing, especially because children were affected. The emergency services described that when they arrived they found vehicles ablaze and numerous injured people. In this case, good preparation for such operations was crucial as the emergency services had recently practiced similar scenarios. The police advise that in the event of a traffic jam, you should reduce your speed and immediately switch on your hazard lights to warn other road users.
