Chinese restaurant apologizes after viral urine video
The Chinese hotpot chain Haidilao has announced that it will provide compensation to over 4,000 guests who visited one of its restaurants in Shanghai. This came after an incident in which two guests urinated in the broth of their hotpot.
Incident and video
A video showing the two men urinating in the broth while eating in a private room at a Haidilao restaurant spread rapidly online late last month. The incident occurred on February 24th, but Haidilao only became aware of the problem four days later and was initially unable to determine exactly when or where it happened.
Inadequate training and response
In its statement, the company said that this case indicates inadequate training procedures. This resulted in staff not being able to recognize the situation in time. Haidilao confirmed the location in downtown Shanghai on March 6.
take responsibility
“We fully understand that no way can fully compensate for the harm caused to our customers by this incident,” the company said in its statement. “We are prepared to do what we can to take responsibility.” However, the exact amount of compensation was not disclosed.
Legal action and arrests
Haidilao reported the incident to police in Jianyang, Sichuan, where the company is headquartered, and other locations. Two 17-year-old men have now been arrested, according to a statement from Shanghai police. The company filed a civil lawsuit against the two investigations on Monday.
