Vienna Heldenplatz: Demo despite ban – mood escalates!
On Saturday there was a rally at Heldenplatz in Vienna after a planned demonstration around the ring was banned by the Vienna State Police Department. According to the police, who justified this approach by saying they wanted to avoid traffic chaos and disruption to business owners, several hundred participants gathered at the Archduke Karl Equestrian Monument. The demonstrators expressed their displeasure with Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen's decision not to entrust the Freedom Party (FPÖ) with government negotiations oe24 reported.
Despite the initial peacefulness, the mood at Heldenplatz grew and tensions arose when the castle gate was blocked by the police. The rally was unmistakable: Equipped with cowbells, drums and flags, including Russian flags, the participants chanted slogans such as “Resistance” and “Nehammer must go!” In this context, there was repeated criticism of the special handling of the police, who apparently wanted to put obstacles in the way of the people gathered, according to reports wien.ORF.at.
Security situation and incidents
While the police initially spoke of no special incidents, several knives and a blank gun were found during identity checks in the area surrounding the rally. These discoveries shed light on the security situation during the demonstration, which plans to protest against the various political decisions and those taking action. The organizers announced that they would take legal action against the demonstration ban, and pressure on the security forces is expected to continue in the coming days.
