Government negotiations failed: SPÖ calls for new talks!
The negotiations between the ÖVP and the FPÖ have failed, which will have a significant impact on Austria's political future. Mario Leiter, club chairman of the SPÖ Vorarlberg, expressed himself clearly and supported the view of Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig. He noted that the FPÖ does not treat the ÖVP as a partner, but rather as an opponent. He describes this as a disrespectful attitude that jeopardizes the basis for cooperation. According to the leader, the FPÖ, which emerged as the strongest party in the National Council election on September 29th, is not willing to compromise and has undermined the negotiations from the start. This could make it even more difficult to form a government in the coming years. Such insights were provided by: OTS.
A look back at the negotiations
It has already taken more than four months since the election with no new government in sight. The chronology of events so far makes it clear that a complex game of power relations has been observed since the National Council election. While the FPÖ won 28.8 percent of the votes and thus 57 seats, the ÖVP followed with 26.3 percent (51 seats) and the SPÖ with 21.1 percent (41 seats). Various explorations and negotiations took place between the ÖVP, SPÖ and the NEOS, but the talks between the ÖVP and the FPÖ were broken off on January 4th and Nehammer resigned as chancellor and party leader. The press reported on the tough processes and the uncertainties in the political space.
The current anger over the failure of the negotiations is palpable, especially from the perspective of the SPÖ, which emphasizes that the talks with the FPÖ and ÖVP are too far apart to find a successful path. The voters' tailwind is further slowed by internal tensions and the lack of clear compromises. In order to secure political stability and the future of Austria, Leiter strongly advocated a return to the negotiating table with the SPÖ, emphasizing that the SPÖ is always ready for solutions that could move the country forward.
