Coalition crisis in Styria: ÖVP and FPÖ before a decisive deal?
The political landscape in Styria is facing potentially drastic changes: After the upcoming coalition negotiations between the ÖVP and FPÖ, speculation about possible cooperation is becoming more intense than ever. According to political scientist Peter Filzmaier, in an interview with ORF Styria spoke, a coalition of ÖVP and FPÖ could bring strategic advantages, while cooperation with the SPÖ would be more difficult. Filzmaier explains that the SPÖ recently offered itself 'quite cheaply', which raises questions about the ÖVP's future negotiating strategy.
Coalition negotiations and power games
A central point in the negotiations appears to be the issue of “Liezen Lead Hospital”, which is of great importance for the FPÖ. Mario Kunasek, the state party chairman of the FPÖ, is calling for alternative plans for the hospital locations, while the ÖVP - led by state governor Christopher Drexler - insists on building a new hospital in Stainach-Pürgg. “Compromises like half a hospital are not obvious,” said Filzmaier, who also warns of a loss of face for the ÖVP. There is also speculation as to whether Drexler can remain in his role as state governor.
The FPÖ has positioned itself well in the 2024 election, which, according to Filzmaier, is primarily due to the successful discussion of immigration and the occupation of rural areas. The party was also able to mobilize many former non-voters. “The top voting motive was the substantive viewpoints,” explains Filzmaier in a report by courier. The poor performance of the SPÖ and ÖVP could also put pressure on coalition negotiations at the federal level, even if Filzmaier warns that emotional dynamics cannot be completely escaped.
