Coalition crisis in Styria: ÖVP and FPÖ in front of a decisive deal?

The political landscape in Styria is facing possibly drastic changes: According to the upcoming coalition negotiations between the ÖVP and FPÖ, speculation about possible cooperation becomes more intensive than ever. According to political scientist Peter Filzmaier, who spoke in an interview with ORF Styria , a coalition from ÖVP and FPÖ could bring strategic advantages, while working with the SPÖ was more difficult. Filzmaier explains that the SPÖ has recently offered 'quite cheap', which raises questions about the future negotiation strategy of the ÖVP.

A central point in the negotiations seems to be the topic of "leading hospital Liezen", which is of great importance for the FPÖ. Mario Kunasek, the state party chairman of the FPÖ, demands alternative plans for the hospital locations, while the ÖVP-led by Governor Christopher Drexler-insists on the construction of a hospital in Stainach-Pürgg. "Compromises like half a hospital are not obvious," said Filzmaier, who also warns of a facial loss for the ÖVP. It is also speculated whether Drexler can remain in his role as governor.

The FPÖ was well positioned in the 2024 election, which, according to Filzmaier, is primarily due to the successful topic of immigration and the occupation of rural areas. The party was also able to mobilize many former non -voters. "The top selection motif was the content of the content," explains Filzmaier in a report by Kurier . The poor performance of SPÖ and ÖVP could also put pressure on the coalition negotiations at the federal level, even if Filzmaier warns that emotional dynamics cannot be completely escaped.
