Future of the renovation: Experts urgently call for new framework conditions!
Wien, Österreich - As part of the series of events "Buwog in conversation", on April 28, 2025, a panel discussion on the topic "Sustainable inventory: future -proof, innovative, economical!" instead of. Around 200 participants: inside, including representatives from the economy and the construction and real estate industry, discussed the pressing questions of contemporary renovation.
Kevin Töpfer, Managing Director of Buwog, emphasized the need for energy efficiency and climate neutrality in new construction projects. He emphasized that sustainable renovations offer great potential for CO2 reduction. In this context, Anna-Vera Deinhammer referred to the Omnibus Ordinance 2025, which introduces new renovation standards and reporting obligations. She made it clear that the renovation of the building stock is a crucial lever to achieve climate goals.
future viability and economic attractiveness
The experts of the discussion round, including Peter Engert, spoke about the economic sensuality of renovations for existing holders. Engert called for better framework conditions for the renovations. Töpfer and Deinhammer supported this call and appealed to politics, functioning and sustainable conversion regulations.
The discussion about the economic attractiveness of the existing renovation grew in importance, especially with regard to the energy -based renovation and conversion of existing buildings. According to an article by bbik.de, the energetic renovation is crucial for a sustainable future. In Germany, over 15 billion tons of building material were installed, with two thirds of all residential buildings being built before 1979. On average, older buildings consume five times more energy than modern new buildings.
challenges and solutions
A higher renovation rate is necessary to reach Germany's climate goals. Prof. Dr. Anja Rosen from the RE! Source Stiftung e.V. therefore calls for increased focus on renovation and reuse. They argue that avoidance of new buildings and the demolition of existing buildings not only protects resources, but also reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
In order to advance sustainable renovations, the challenges in the area of permits and the available data must be overcome via the building fabric. In this sense, increased individual advice and clearer regulations for owners are sought. Initiatives, such as those of the Brandenburg Chamber of Engineering, ask the industry to focus more on renovation and conversion, to create living space and maintain historical building fabric.
In the publication of the IG life cycle, it is defined that sustainable renovations affect buildings that need as little resources as possible during their construction, operation and dismantling. The guideline is on the owner of the building: directed on the inside and addresses the problems with which they are faced.
The next event of "Buwog in conversation" is planned for autumn 2025, and it remains to be hoped that until then there will be clear progress in the implementation of the measures discussed.
