Returning crushed cans: This is how it works at the deposit machine!

A new one-way deposit system has been in force in Austria since the beginning of 2023. Consumers can return empty disposable packaging such as plastic bottles and cans with a deposit logo in many supermarkets and shops. Returns are usually made via return machines that pay out 25 cents per item. If you have problems with the return, such as the machine not accepting crushed cans, it is advisable to ask staff for assistance.

The employee has the option of manually accepting the can and paying out the deposit, as long as the barcode and deposit logo are clearly visible. However, if the barcode or deposit logo is severely damaged, it cannot be returned and the affected packaging must be disposed of in the yellow bag or yellow bin. A tip to avoid such problems: only crush cans after they have been returned or be careful not to damage them too much when collecting them, reports Cosmo.

Return locations and procedures

Sales outlets that have a deposit logo are obliged to take back this disposable deposit packaging. In highly frequented locations such as shopping centers, train stations or airports, several points of sale can set up a common collection point. This redemption point must be in the immediate vicinity of the points of sale, and the deposit vouchers issued there can also be redeemed nearby. The return can be done both manually and via machines. However, when taking back manually, the sales outlets are only obliged to take back the usual sales quantity and filling quantity, which applies to bakeries, for example österreich.gv.at explained.

What is particularly noteworthy is that from January 1, 2025, consumers in Austria can also return packaging without a deposit logo, but without a deposit refund. These may be bottled until March 31, 2025 and sold until the end of 2025. According to Christian Prauchner, chairman of the Federal Food Trade Committee, the system was well prepared and training for sales staff and information campaigns for consumers were carried out. This is to help ensure that the return goes smoothly.

Conclusion and outlook

The Austrian Chamber of Commerce and the Federal Food Trade Committee have made a significant contribution to the implementation of the one-way deposit system and draw a positive conclusion. Christoph Atzmüller, managing director of the Federal Food Trade Committee, is optimistic about the high response rate that this system is intended to achieve. It is seen as an important step in climate protection to promote the recovery of materials and reduce the consumption of single-use packaging. WKO reports that the goal is also to continuously improve the system and make it more efficient.
