Tragic subway adventure: Two teenagers die after a risky stunt
A tragic incident in Vienna has caused excitement and sadness in recent days. After a daring attempt to surf on a subway, which resulted in two young people suffering serious injuries, the second of the two victims, an 18-year-old, has now died. The young man, who was until recently treated in the intensive care unit of the General Hospital, died on Tuesday, nine days after the accident.
This accident occurred on the evening of last Tuesday at the Schönbrunn U4 station when a group of four young people - two from the Czech Republic and two from Austria - had the crazy idea of riding on the roof of a subway while traveling. The action started just after 4pm when the social media lads came up with the idea, presumably to create a viral clip. The tragedy began when the 18-year-old and the 17-year-old, both Czech citizens, crashed onto the pedestrian bridge.
The dramatic accident
Another person involved, a 16-year-old girl, suffered only minor injuries, while a 13-year-old boy was uninjured. The subway passengers witnessed this dangerous stunt, which had fatal consequences. After the incident, the subway driver received psychological support as he had to deal with the traumatic experiences.
In the days after the accident, a video appeared on TikTok in which one of the young people involved speaks resignedly about the incident. He explains: "It's like an addiction. There are many beautiful moments, but it is an extremely deadly sport. I ask you not to imitate it." The young man, who is masked and with a scarf over his face, also claims that his friends did not notice that a footbridge was nearby, which led to the fatal accident.
In a statement, the Wiener Linien outlines the dangers of such actions and urgently calls on people to refrain from these life-threatening tests of courage. A spokeswoman said: “No TikTok video, dare or selfie in the world is worth climbing onto a subway or tram and risking your life.” Everyone was also asked to use the emergency call facilities in the event of a dangerous incident.
Although the shockwaves of this tragic incident are still being felt, it remains a powerful appeal to young people to stay away from such reckless actions. The affected families and friends are under enormous emotional pressure as the city continues to be reeling from the impact of this tragedy.
