New life in Grätzl: Taverna opens at Albertgasse 49

Something presentable is happening in the heart of Josefstadt, as a well-known face in the catering industry is returning. Andreas Flatscher, former owner of the popular “Laundry”, has decided to let his passion for gastronomy blossom again and is opening his new restaurant “Taverna” in his old place of work at Albertgasse 49.

The taverna is intended to be a place for socializing. With his vision for the venue, Flatscher wants to provide both a restaurant for special occasions and an informal place where people can simply come together to enjoy a drink. “What is really missing in the Eighth District is such a social meeting place,” he explains. The new concept combines the world of cicchetteria with Italian grill.

A place with character

The Taverna exists for a reason: Flatscher draws on his enthusiasm for the Sicilian liqueur Averna, which is reflected in many of the details in the restaurant. The interior, which is reminiscent of a stylish cigar bar from the 70s, promises an inviting atmosphere that is particularly effective at night - “The interior exudes its own charm in the evening,” says the restaurateur.

Every guest is welcome at the Taverna, be it for a relaxed after-work drink or for a festive dinner reservation. The crossover concept invites visitors to spontaneously take a seat at a table or even linger at the bar. Flatscher emphasizes that it is important to him that everyone feels comfortable in the restaurant.

Culinary highlights

For Flatscher, gastronomy also means diversity. An absolute must for every guest is the Cioppino, a delicious stew made from fresh seafood and fish. “It will be freshly prepared while supplies last,” he explains. Additionally, visitors can expect a carefully curated cocktail menu inspired primarily by Averna. For those who aren't into the bitter liqueur, he particularly recommends the Seaside Negroni, which is also very popular with his wife, who doesn't normally like Averna.

The taverna will also offer a terrace with space for around 70 people in summer. Flatscher is also planning an Italian brunch on the weekends once the temperatures rise.

The Taverna is open Tuesday to Thursday and Sunday from 4 p.m. to midnight; until 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Further information is on the website t-averna.bar available.
