Vienna in an election frenzy: ballot papers for the local council election have been printed!
A new municipal council will be elected in Vienna on April 27, 2025. This has been officially announced and the ballot papers for it are already being printed, as vienna.at reported. Citizens eligible to vote are allowed to fill out two ballot papers on this day: one for the local council election and one for the district council election.
The ballot papers vary depending on the constituency and district, as not all parties run in every district. A total of seven parties are on the ballot throughout Vienna: SPÖ, ÖVP, Greens, NEOS, FPÖ, Team HC Strache (Heinz-Christian Strache) and the KPÖ and LINKS alliance (KPÖ). Parties that are not currently represented in the city parliament had to collect 100 declarations of support in all 17 constituencies in order to be able to run citywide.
Regional differences and eligible voters
Three lists only run in certain constituencies: The SÖZ list (Social Austria of the Future) has nominations for all constituencies except Inner West, Hietzing and Döbling, while the PRO 23 list only runs in Liesing and the HERZ list only in the Favoriten constituency. In the district council elections, voters in all 23 districts are allowed to vote for the SPÖ, ÖVP, Greens, NEOS, FPÖ or KPÖ. A total of 17 different lists have submitted election proposals with sufficient signatures, some of which are only running in a single district.
1,109,936 people are entitled to vote in the municipal council elections, while a total of 1,374,712 people are entitled to vote in the district council elections, including 264,776 non-Austrian EU citizens. Voting takes place in 1,504 polling stations or alternatively by voting card and postal vote at home or directly at the district office.
Important information about voting
The polling stations are open on election day from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. In order to vote, voters must bring a valid identity document such as a passport, ID card or driver's license. eIDs, such as digital driver's licenses or digital ID cards, are not accepted at polling stations. Around two weeks before the election, “Official Election Information” is sent by post to those eligible to vote, which contains information about the relevant polling station. An online polling station search is also available to find the responsible polling station.
The electoral roll can be viewed from the beginning of February. House announcements provide information about the number of eligible voters per apartment. The correction procedure for the electoral roll will take place from February 18th to 27th, during which period people with their main residence in Austria can apply for entries, deletions or corrections in the electoral roll, such as wien.gv.at supplemented.
The Vienna municipal council and district council elections therefore offer an important opportunity for citizens to raise their voices and actively participate in democratic decision-making. Loud oesterreich.gv.at All Austrian citizens who have celebrated their 16th birthday by election day are eligible to vote, as well as non-Austrian EU citizens who also have their 16th birthday by this date and live in Vienna on the deadline.
