Step towards security: Petition to reduce the speed in Hernals

A petition from the Hernals district has recently attributed attention and managed to get the necessary number of signatures to be treated in the Vienna municipal council. This petition aims at a temporary reduction in Hernalser Hauptstraße to increase general security and to improve the shopping experience for residents.

The Hernalser Hauptstraße is currently not exactly showing its best side. In many places, vacant businesses can be observed, which indicates a declining economic trend in the area. The initiative under the direction of Joachim Zittmayr would like to remedy a speed of 50 km/h to 30 km/h. This change would be particularly important for the section between Elterleinplatz and the belt.

economic pressure and traffic safety

The background of the petition is alarming: According to Zittmayr, the remaining shops in Hernalser Hauptstraße have hardly any sales, which leads to a serious survival problem for the managing directors. "The unattractive situation makes it difficult for business to keep up," explains Zittmayr. The initiator has been committed to these changes since the beginning of 2019 and was able to achieve a speed measurement by the district, which showed that the average speed is actually 33 km/h.

With over 800 voices collected, Zittmayr mobilized like -minded people, which led to the petition in the petition committee. During the last session, the mobility councilor Uli Sima (SPÖ) expressed skepticism about the suggestions and emphasized the high importance of Hernalser Hauptstraße for throughput traffic. Therefore, according to Sima, there is no change in the speed limit.

Zittmayr contradicts this statement. He draws attention to the fact that there are enough roads with a similar traffic meaning, which nevertheless have lower speed limits. District head Peter Jagsch (SPÖ) said that a 30 zone currently fails due to the lack of legal basis. However, he gave his support for the request a clear promise if a corresponding solution should be found. Zittmayr notes that this initiative must assume from the district. Unfortunately, he states, "the political will is not available".

At the moment it remains unclear whether the petition will be treated further. So far, the district has not announced a specific time frame or status regarding the final decision; At the moment the status of the petition is considered "in processing".

The citizens of Hernals can only hope that their voice will be heard and that the conditions in their neighborhood will improve as quickly as possible. Detables on this topic are also in a current report on www.meinbezirk.at to read.
