Vienna is investing 300,000 euros for better working conditions for the police!

On April 25, 2025, the City of Vienna and the Friends of the Vienna Police announced a significant funding project to improve conditions for police stations. A sum of 300,000 euros is intended to optimize the working conditions of Vienna police officers and support the recruitment of new staff. Mayor Ludwig emphasizes the importance of solid working relationships as a crucial factor in combating the shortage of police personnel.

The project covers two central areas: Firstly, climate-related measures are planned for particularly stressed Vienna police departments. Secondly, the continued operation of the “Info Store” on Vienna’s Schottenring will be secured. This is considered an important contact point for those interested in a career in the police. Over 3,000 people have visited the information store in the last year and a half, which has led to a doubling of the number of trainees in police training in Vienna to around 800.

Importance of good working conditions

Gerhard Pürstl, the state police chief of Vienna, emphasizes how important the support from the city is to improve working conditions for the police. In his statement, Karl Javurek, President of the Association of Friends of the Vienna Police, is pleased with the appreciation for the work of the police officers. The measures were developed in close coordination with the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the Vienna State Police Directorate.

The reforms in the public service, which have not just been discussed today, have had a comprehensive impact on the employment situation in this sector since the 1990s. According to an analysis of the full surveys by the Federal Statistical Office, which covers the years 1993 to 2018, large-scale privatization led to significant staff reductions. Vacancies were increasingly filled on a part-time or temporary basis, which increased the uncertainty about the uniform implementation of the reforms by the federal, state and local governments.

Reforms and their consequences

The different effects of these reforms on civil servants and employees are part of a broader discussion. According to WSI, all groups of employees in the public sector are affected by these changes, but to different degrees. The need for initiatives like the funding project in Vienna becomes even clearer due to these framework conditions.

Mayor Ludwig invites all interested citizens to find out about career opportunities with the Vienna police and to support the initiative. This is a step in the right direction to increase the attractiveness of the police service and build the necessary human resources.
