Important financial online change: 2FA makes access safer!

From October 1, 2025, there will be a significant change for users of the Finanzonline portal in Austria. The usual login method will no longer be possible, since the introduction of two-factor authentication (2FA) becomes mandatory for access to the portal. This measure was announced in February 2025 and reminds users with the need to change the need to change. The step to 2FA serves primarily to increase the security of all accounts, especially in view of the increasing number of cyber attacks, phishing and malware attacks, such as an analysis of online security.gv.at illustrates.

currently use about 6.5 million people Finanzonline, of which around 2.6 million have to activate 2FA in order to continue to be able to use access to important functions such as tax equalization. With the 2FA it is necessary to complete a second confirmation step in addition to the conventional access data. According to 5min.at, the use of id Austria is recommended as the simplest method for activating the 2FA.

activation of the ID Austria

In order to register for the ID Austria, users must install the "Digital Office" app, carry out an online preamplifier and then go to a corresponding authority, such as the magistrate or the police. Around 3.9 million people in Austria use ID Austria, which illustrates the number of users required for the changeover to 2FA.

Restoration of the 2FA

In the event that users have no access to your registered device, the system offers two ways to restore the two-factor authentication, depending on whether a recovery code is available. If there is one, the user can register with Finanzonline, select the corresponding option and enter the code. This enables the reset of the 2FA and the registration of a new device. However, if the recovery code has been lost, the users must call the login page, choose the "Forgot or blocked password" option and enter their social security number, an official photo ID and the user name to get a new initial fun word (bmf.gv.at).

The introduction of the 2FA is seen as a crucial step to better protect sensitive data. The additional safety layer consists of knowledge (e.g. password) and possession (e.g. an authentication token). Users should be aware of the advantages of this method, but also consider whether the additional effort for the additional security level makes sense for them.
