Appreciation instead of etiquette: This is how Austrians will date in 2025!
A current study by marketagent.com, which was carried out on behalf of Parship.at, shows interesting insights into Austria's dating culture. The survey, which surveyed 1,533 people, including 435 singles, took place between November 21 and December 4, 2024. The results, published on August 11, 2025, reveal what many singles value when dating.
Appreciation and respectful treatment are the top priority for 70% of those surveyed, followed by a polite tone, which 65% consider to be important. A well-groomed appearance also plays an important role for 59%. Many singles seem to find traditional etiquette less important; However, there are still women who insist on, for example, holding the door for them (27%) or accompanying them in dark areas (40%). Punctuality is also very important to more than two thirds of respondents, with 66% confirming this.
Behavior when eating and dealing with staff
The study highlights that cell phones should be put away while eating, which 58% of respondents believe is important. Likewise, the tone of the staff is important for 50% of singles, while only 13% of those surveyed consider the size of the tip to be relevant. These demands seem to be growing particularly among older singles who value traditional polite behavior.
The study also revealed gender-specific differences. Compared to men, women are more demanding when dating, especially in aspects such as stylish appearance (73% for women vs. 60% for men) and the desire for the person they are dating to let them finish (60% for women vs. 40% for men).
Regional differences in the federal states
The regional differences in Austria also reveal exciting facets in dating behavior. Some federal states particularly stand out:
| Federal State | Important points |
|---|---|
| Carinthia | 71% don't want a cell phone at the table. |
| Upper Austria | 76% value a well-groomed appearance. |
| Lower Austria | 81% value respects interaction. |
| Salzburg | 53% are least demanding when it comes to punctuality. |
| Styria | 54% want a lot of eye contact. |
| Tyrol | 76% pay attention to polite tone. |
| Vienna | 51% do not expect cell phones to be put away while eating. |
Overall, the study reflects the changing values in dating, where respect and appreciation remain central factors. The results show that even as modern etiquette becomes more important, many traditional aspects of etiquette continue to be valued, especially among older singles.
