Hiker falls on the Traunstein: Rescue successfully by helicopter!

On Wednesday, June 4, 2025, the mountain rescue service Gmunden was alerted twice in a short episode at the Traunstein. Around 2:20 p.m., a 43-year-old hiker from Germany was injured at the descent from the Traunstein at around 1,260 meters, near the area, which is known as "Bründl". The woman, who had climbed the summit of the 1,691 meter high Traunstein at 8:30 a.m., was on the way back over the Mairalm-Steig when she suffered her injury and was no longer able to continue the descent.

the following hikers were quickly on hand and alerted the mountain rescue service via the alpine emergency call 140. As a result, an emergency helicopter was requested that located the injured hiker. With the help of a 30-meter dew, the mountain rescue brought the woman to safety. First she was flown to a reversal place, where the helicopter landed before it was transported to the Salzkammergut Klinikum Gmunden to be medical supplied there.

second rescue operation on the Traunstein

The emergency helicopter "Christophorus 10" from Hörsching quickly came to help and saved the man with a variable rope to fly him into the valley. During the rescue, a 60-year-old woman from the Gmunden district was also reported, who felt strong knee pain during relegation on the Mairalm-Steig and was also unable to descend. A team of operations made their way to her and brought them safely to the forest road into the Lainautal, where she was released into home care.

frequent mountain accidents

The two rescue operations on the Traunstein have been in the context of a worrying accumulation of mountain accidents in the past few weeks. Reports reported several incidents that hikers and mountaineers led to the emergency situations. Just recently, a group of six from Germany had to be saved in the mountains of the wild emperor after they got into mountainous due to exhaustion and weather conditions. There was also a tragic incident on the Rimpfischhorn in the Valais Alps, in which five ski tourers lost their lives. Such events illustrate the risks that exist in mountain activities and emphasize the importance of security and the right preparation when hiking in the Alps.
