The state elections in Vorarlberg were hotly contested, and the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) clearly defended its first place despite losses. According to an updated projection, the ÖVP is at 38.7 percent, followed by the FPÖ at 27.7 percent. The Greens had to retreat to third place, while SPÖ and NEOS are fighting for fourth place.
In terms of mandates, this means that the ÖVP lost two seats and now holds 15 seats. The FPÖ gained six seats and now has eleven members of the state parliament. The Greens lost three seats and are now represented with four seats. SPÖ lost one mandate and now holds three seats, while NEOS remains unchanged at three seats.
Voter turnout was 67.9 percent, which is an increase compared to 2019. The state election represents a change in policy in the state parliament, as there is now a solid black-blue majority with 26 seats. Despite the narrow majority between black-blue and black-green, the election was a significant political development in Vorarlberg.
The state elections in Vorarlberg are known for their shortness, as the polls closed at 1 p.m. and a provisional final result was expected between 5 and 6 p.m. A total of 271,882 people were eligible to vote, although there is a five percent threshold to enter the state parliament. In contrast, in the National Council elections only four percent of the votes are enough to get into parliament.
The elections showed that the political landscape in Vorarlberg is changing and the balance of power in the state parliament is changing. Despite losses, the ÖVP was able to maintain its position as a leading force and help shape the country's political direction.
