Vorarlberg in election fever: ÖVP in the fight against the FPÖ
In Vorarlberg, the ÖVP is facing a test: After the rise of the FPÖ, the future of the black-green coalition will be decisive on October 13th. What's next?
Vorarlberg in election fever: ÖVP in the fight against the FPÖ
The Austrian state of Vorarlberg, known for its deep ÖVP roots, is facing a crucial election. The incumbent state governor Markus Wallner, in office since 2011, finds himself in an unexpected competition as the FPÖ celebrated an unprecedented triumph in the national election at the end of September. The party under Herbert Kickl was able to win over 28 percent of the votes, making it clear that they were gaining influence in Vorarlberg. In some cities, including Feldkirch, Hohenems and Bludenz, the FPÖ even gained leadership. While the ÖVP is still ahead nationwide, they are feeling the pressure.
Voters are called again next Sunday. The latest Vorarlberger Nachrichten poll was published before the FPÖ's national success and shows the ÖVP only slightly ahead, while the Freedom Party suggests they could double their result. The Greens, traditionally less strong in Vorarlberg, see an increase to around 18 percent, while the SPÖ and the Neos are at twelve and ten percent.
The upcoming elections and their significance
Wallner emphasizes that election day on October 13th will be crucial for the future formation of a government. He emphasizes the need for a clear government mandate for the People's Party in order to ensure the rapid implementation of its policies. In the event of a possible loss, the ÖVP would have to consider working with a new coalition partner. This could mean a return to a black-blue coalition with the FPÖ if the ÖVP does not gain the required majority with the Greens.
The Greens, under the leadership of Daniel Zadra, who entered government in 2022, have been actively seeking to highlight their successes on the environment and transport. For example, almost 25 percent of Vorarlberg residents have a climate ticket, which allows unlimited travel on public transport. Zadra explains that a positive balance with regard to local transport and the expansion of electric buses is crucial to convince voters. At the same time, the Greens criticize the right-wing populist tone of the FPÖ, which is often characterized by aggressive rhetoric against migrants.
The challenges for forming a government
A central issue remains the construction of the Lake Constance Expressway, which is intended to create a connection between the highways in Austria and Switzerland. This project, which has been discussed for decades, could have a significant impact on transport and the economy in the region. Wallner emphasizes the importance of cooperation with neighboring countries such as Germany, especially in the context of energy supply, with the planned largest pumped storage power plant in Central Europe, which is intended to act as a central resource for southern Germany.
The structures and approaches in Vorarlberg sometimes differ from the federal political agenda. FPÖ candidates like Christoph Bitschi have chosen a moderate approach and focus on issues such as family policy and renewable energies. In contrast, Zadra aims to remind the ÖVP of its achievements in cooperation with the Greens in order to convince voters of their importance. This electoral situation presents Vorarlberg with new challenges as the parties prepare for potentially changing political alliances.
The outcome of the election could not only determine the future political landscape of the region, but also show to what extent the dynamics between traditional politics and new currents can change.
