Drunk driving ends dramatic: 18-year-old injured, driver's license away!

In the night of Saturday, April 26, 2025, there was a serious traffic accident in the village of Roithen, municipality of Scharten, Upper Austria, which was caused by alcoholized driving. A 53-year-old Hungarian from the Welsland district drove his car from Finklham towards Scharten when he collided with an oncoming vehicle in a slight right-hand bend. The other car, which was directed by an 18-year-old from the Eferding district, had an 18-year-old passenger from the Rohrbach district.

The passenger was slightly injured in the collision and had to be taken to the Wels Clinic. An alkomatt test for the 53-year-old driver showed a value of 1.72 per thousand, which led to an immediate acceptance of his driver's license. The incident impressively illustrates the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The risks of alcohol in road traffic

alcohol influence is a significant risk factor in road traffic. In 2021, the Federal Statistical Office in Germany registered 13,628 traffic accidents with personal injury, in which at least one involved was alcoholic. This corresponds to 5.3 % of all accidents with personal injury, which is a worrying development compared to the 13,003 alcohol accidents in 2020. In addition, a total of 16,426 people crashed in these accidents, 165 of whom died. It is particularly fatal that almost every other day a person dies in an alcohol accident.

Most alcohol accidents often occur on weekends. Statistically speaking, 24.7 % of these accidents accounted for a Saturday and 21.1 %. In contrast, only 12.3 % of the accidents with personal injury occurred on a Saturday and only 9.8 % on a Sunday. A frightening picture that underlines the need for increased clarification and prevention in dealing with alcohol in road traffic.

a falling but still critical problem

Although the figures of alcohol accidents have dropped by 73.6 % since 1975, the proportion of alcohol -related accidents remains remarkable. The decline in the proportion of alcohol influencing accidents on all accidents with personal loss of 13.8 % in 1975 to the current 5.3 % shows progress, but social interaction with the topic is still a challenge. Every single accident, such as the latest incident in Scharten, must serve as a wake -up call.

Finally, it should be said that the fatal consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol are not to be underestimated. The incident of April 26, 2025 is not only a sad example of individual fate, but also reflects the entire social problems in dealing with alcohol in road traffic. In order to increase security on the streets, there is still an enlightenment and strict controls.
