Tragic death of Pawlos: missing child recovered from Lahn

A tragic incident became known in Weilburg on Easter Sunday when a lifeless child's body was recovered from the Lahn. Police confirmed it was six-year-old Pawlos, who had been missing since March 25. Pawlos suffered from autism and disappeared from his special school, making the search for him particularly challenging. A canoeist discovered the child's body around 6 p.m. and immediately alerted the authorities, who rushed to the site with the fire department, emergency services and police. However, the emergency doctor could only determine death, which plunged the entire city community into deep mourning.

The extensive search operation included up to 600 emergency services who combed a three-kilometer-long area around Weilburg. The Bundeswehr helped with the search efforts with special aircraft. Prime Minister Boris Rhein expressed his dismay and thanked the numerous helpers who took part in the search. The sympathy of the citizens in Weilburg was great, many brought up colorful balloons to attract Pawlos' attention.

Special features when searching for autistic children

Pawlos, who suffers from autism, posed a particular challenge for the rescue workers. Special education teacher Sarah Weber explained that autistic children perceive stimuli differently and are often tense in unfamiliar situations. Therefore, she recommended not using loud calls during the search to avoid scaring the boy and thus exacerbating his disoriented behavior. The police asked the public to call 110 if they discovered Pawlos.

Responders also focused on bodies of water because many autistic children have a preference for them. Weber pointed out that it can be dangerous for Pawlos to be near water, especially because he could become disoriented in such a situation. Music familiar to Pawlos and audio recordings of his mother were played from police cars to lure and find him.

A sad trend

The case is reminiscent of the fates of similar missing children like Arian from Lower Saxony, who disappeared in March 2024. In Germany, there have been increasing reports of missing children with special support needs in recent years. The incident has once again highlighted the challenges involved in finding autistic children. Rescue services are now increasingly relying on specialized search dogs and drones to increase the efficiency and safety of search measures.

Investigations into the exact circumstances of Pawlos' death are still pending, but the tragedy of his fate has sparked a wave of solidarity and compassion within the community.
