Finally clarity: bypass added after 40 years of planning
After decades of discussions and numerous planning changes, the way for the bypass is finally free. The project, which includes Zillertalstraße, the connection of Harter Straße and the relocation of the Zillertalbahn, is now faced with the gradual implementation. But before the excavators can roll, a considerable period of time will pass.
Already since the 1980s there has been discussion in the front Zillertal about opportunities to improve the traffic situation. Again and again it was planned, rejected and political support changed. In recent years, Mayor Dominik Mainusch (ÖVP) has set the course with the local council. In 2017, the road project was officially approved, which gave the impetus for implementation. The state parliament of Tyrol approved a financing of almost 100 million euros in 2019, which is a significant progress for the project.
Legal road construction notification
In the course of the past few years there have been numerous legal disputes in which two affected landowners made appeals up to the Supreme Court. This process lasted 2.5 years and prevented the progress significantly. However, there is now a decision: all appeals have been rejected, the road construction notification is final. Mayor Mainusch sees this decision a huge progress: "This is a milestone for the bypass project. With this legally binding decision, we have come a big deal.
Although this step is significant progress, there are still many tasks to cope with. The state of Tyrol had been waiting to wait for the highest court knowledge. Now the other procedures, such as nature conservation, water law and the basic insulation, must be completed as quickly as possible. "The valley rightly demands for traffic relief," clarifies Mainusch and emphasizes urgency.
further steps necessary
A rapid implementation of the project depends on the speed with which the necessary steps can be promoted. At the moment, those responsible expect that it can take two to three years for construction work to begin. Mayor Mainusch emphasizes that this project should not be viewed in isolation. At the same time, further traffic policy measures must be taken in the valley. In particular, the renewal of the motorway junction in Wiesing and the Zillertalbahn are on the agenda.
A review of the eventful history of the traffic solutions in the Zillertal shows how much patience and perseverance went into this project. The goal remains clear: a significant relief for traffic in the valley, which is of enormous importance for all affected residents.
