Renovation of the dilapidated Lueg Bridge: traffic jams and driving bans in Tyrol!

The Lueg Bridge, a landmark on the Austrian Brenner Motorway, has reached its service life after 55 years of use and is facing urgent renovation. How oe24 reported that the renovation work began at the beginning of the year, which already led to traffic jams on Fridays. In order to ease the traffic situation, an extended truck driving ban in Tyrol will come into force from tomorrow. Trucks over 7.5 tons are only allowed to drive on the Brenner and Inntal motorways between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. on Saturdays.

The Luegbrücke is not only the longest bridge on the Brennerstraße, but is also considered one of the most complicated structures to build on this highway. With a total length of 1,804 meters, it crosses steep, forested terrain at an impressive 1,300 meters above sea level, reports Wikipedia. It was built between 1966 and 1968 and has undergone several renovations since then, but the current investigation shows that the structure is damaged beyond repair. The need for rehabilitation comes in the context of decades of winter traffic that have increased stress on the structure.

Consequences for traffic

During the last Christmas holidays, authorities turned away around 45,000 vehicles from the main traffic routes at the Brenner border to avoid traffic jams. The new driving bans are intended to relieve the communities in the Tyrolean Wipptal from the heavy traffic. Next Saturday there will also be checks at the entry points near Brenner and in Kiefersfelden to ensure compliance with the new regulations, as the state transport department announced. Vehicles that do not comply with the regulations must turn back.
