Cycling event of the year: Tour of the Alps inspires East Tyrol!

The Tour of the Alps 2025 is just around the corner and promises an exciting cycling event in the heart of the Alps. From April 21st to 25th, the cross-border stage race will once again connect the Euregio areas of Tyrol, South Tyrol and Trentino. The event was presented on November 21, 2024 at the PalaCongressi in Riva del Garda and is generating great interest within the international cycling scene.

In total, the tour includes five demanding stages with a total length of 739 kilometers and 14,700 meters of altitude. The first stage takes place on Easter Sunday, April 20th, in San Lorenzo Dorsino and the route takes participants through diverse and challenging routes, including the impressive terrain in East Tyrol.

Racing days in East Tyrol

On the fourth day of racing, April 24th, the queen stage starts in Sillian at 10:50 a.m. The route leads over the picturesque Misurina Lake with a stopover in Innichen before the cyclists continue in Anras-Oberried and reach Obertilliach via the Kartitscher Sattel. This stage presents the athletes with a demanding final climb that will put their stamina to the test. A special highlight is the fifth stage on April 25th, which begins and ends in Lienz. Here, after 37 flat kilometers, the riders enter the first selective climb over the Bannberg, whose gradients are up to 13 percent.

Felix Gall, Tour de France stage winner, will be at the start line as captain of his team. After a short break due to illness, Gall is back in top form and can count on other prominent participants such as Romain Bardet, Tao Geoghegan Hart and Giulio Ciccone.

Investments and supporting program

The East Tyrol Tourism Association is investing around 100,000 euros in carrying out the two stages in the district, thereby promoting the region's visibility. There is also a partnership with Innsbruck, which provides for the annual organization of two stages in North Tyrol and one stage in East Tyrol every three years. The Tour of the Alps has been a regular guest in the region since 1995 and has become firmly established.

An extensive supporting program accompanies the racing event. The audience can look forward to live broadcasts, musical contributions from students as well as bike parades and performances by mountain bike professional Gabriel Wibmer. A Euregio information stand will also be set up to provide information about cross-border cooperation in the European region of Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino. Matthias Fink highlights the importance of this cooperation and shows the positive effects on the region.

The Tour of the Alps 2025 is therefore not only a sporting highlight, but also a platform to promote regional cooperation and strengthen interest in cycling. The anticipation for the upcoming competitions is palpable and many eyes will be on the alpine landscape.
