Students in Vienna: Housing cost pollution reaches alarming values!
On February 17, 2025, the Viennese Greens, led by Judith Pühringer and Georg Prack, presented an urgent package of measures to reduce the housing costs for students in Vienna. In a press conference in the town hall, they pointed out that the housing cost burden in Vienna has already reached worrying 43 percent of their monthly budget for students. This is only higher in Innsbruck, which means that many students are forced to spend more than 555 euros a month for their accommodation. WG rooms are particularly affected, which have become unaffordable for many, as Pühringer explained. In addition, the IFES study reported that this situation increasingly becomes more critical and that many students come under pressure to work more hours, which has a negative impact on their studies. According to the current student social survey, the housing costs consider the financial situation of those affected considerably.
five urgent demands
In order to reduce the financial burden of students, the Greens call for the introduction of a residential deposit fund, easier access to social housing and living allowance for students. In addition, an attractiveness and renovation of student homes are sought in order to reduce energy costs. Pühringer and Prack emphasized that access to adequate living space should not depend on the family background. "A reasonable living space supply is a fundamental right that every student in Vienna should demand," said Prack. The package of measures is intended to help reduce social inequality and to create more affordable living space for everyone, as also supported the Gras Vienna.
The rising real estate prices and the insufficient support offers mean that many students get into a precarious financial situation. Many have to move from home or insist on a longer period of study to cope with the high cost of living. "We must not accept that," added Ida Belaga from Gras Vienna and found that the measures required are urgently needed to create a fairer living situation. As the first steps, the new regulations could help to ensure the compatibility of study and affordable living space in Vienna, the Greens concluded.
