Excessive outbursts at Krampusball: Mayor draws consequences in Axams
Excessive outbursts at Krampusball: Mayor draws consequences in Axams
In mid -November there were violent riots that were recorded in videos at a Krampus event in Tyrol. These recordings show how Krampusse, part of the Alpine Christmas customs, rushed to young people and devastated the event rooms. The incident occurred in the municipality of Axams in the gymnastics hall of the elementary school, where, according to the "Tyrolean daily", a girl was torn with a chair to the ground.
Although nobody was seriously injured, further videos show the unchecked excesses of the event: furniture was thrown through the hall, tables were damaged and the safety regulations were damaged. Pyrotechnic devices ensured that the soccer field did not remain undamaged either. Mayor Thomas Suitner commented concerns about the increasing level of violence and aggressiveness at these celebrations. He found that some participants had already appeared in a desolate state, which further fueled the explosive mood.
Mayor speaks of "pseudo-traditional events"
The consequence of the incidents is clear: future Krampus events will no longer be allowed in the municipal sports facilities. Mayor Suitner made it clear: "The school and sports club are more important to me than any pseudo-traditional events". This strict measure was decided to ensure the safety of the visitors and the integrity of the facilities.
The chairman of the local Tuifl club, Jonas Gutheinz, was sadly shown by the ban because these events represent an important source of income for the community. He emphasized that there were no assault in this specific case, but he fails to recognize the importance of security. The problems were caused in particular by other groups that performed as guests. These incidents are symptomatic of a bigger problem that has increasingly occurred in recent years with similar festivities.
Again and again such violent riots occur at Krampus and Perchten events in Tyrol and in other federal states. The development raises questions about security and future orientation of such traditions. Many hope that improvements in the organization and the behavior of the participants are necessary to get the cultural customs in a secure framework.
