Eleven East Tyrolean gardens shine thanks to the Nature in the Garden award

In Tyrol it's not just nature that blooms, but also in the gardens! The ceremonial awarding of the “Nature in the Garden” plaque recently took place at the country house in Innsbruck, honoring gardeners who are committed to designing their gardens close to nature. This is done entirely in the interests of environmental protection and the promotion of local animal species.

According to information from the organizers, an impressive 765 gardens throughout Tyrol are now part of the “Nature in the Garden” network. This initiative aims to design gardens so that they provide habitat for native plants and animals. Particular emphasis is placed on avoiding artificial fertilizers and peat. Another important concern is the creation of retreats for hedgehogs, wild bees and other small creatures. The enthusiasm for gardening close to nature is constantly growing - 98 gardeners have already received the coveted plaque this year.

Awards and commitment in East Tyrol

Particularly noteworthy are the eleven gardeners from East Tyrol who traveled to Innsbruck specifically to collect their award. Tyrol's Nature Conservation Councilor René Zumtobel was impressed by the commitment and the growing interest in environmentally friendly garden design: "Whether on a large property or on the balcony, everyone can deal with natural concepts and design their garden accordingly." In future, the plaque will adorn the garden gate of these gardens as an award and serve as a symbol of environmentally conscious action.

The “Nature in the Garden” initiative is embedded in the Tyrolean Education Forum and not only carries out the awards, but also organizes numerous educational events in the region. 82 events are already planned for 2024, including seminars on vegetable cultivation and workshops on tree care. This initiative aims to pass on knowledge about natural garden design to the population.

In addition to private gardens, communities can also benefit from this initiative. The focus here is on creating flowering meadows and avoiding chemical fertilizers on public areas. This not only promotes biodiversity, but also a healthy urban climate.

Initiatives like these make it clear how important it is to integrate nature into our gardens. When hedgehogs and wild bees feel comfortable in home gardens, it contributes to a lively and species-rich environment. For more information and event details visit www.dolomitenstadt.at.
