Eastern Styria: A gourmet journey to apples and the secrets of the abacus
In Eastern Styria, a region known for its picturesque landscapes and warm hospitality, exciting television programs are on the program in the coming days. These programs focus on the diverse culinary delights this area has to offer. In particular, the “Culinary East Styria” will be presented on Saturday, November 9th at 12:15 p.m. on ORF III as part of the program “Genussland Österreich”.
Spectators can look forward to an enjoyable tour through ApfelLand and the Pöllauertal Nature Park. In this episode, regional products such as apples, deer pears, pumpkin seed oil and meat from local organic farmers are particularly highlighted. The episode also offers insights into the myths surrounding the abacus, a fascinating liquor from the region.
A highlight of Styrian cuisine
Shortly afterwards, on November 27th at 8:15 p.m., East Styrian cuisine will once again come into focus - then on the program “Österreich vom Feinsten” on ORF2. The abacus, made in the apple community of Puch near Weiz, is presented here. This special spirit is produced under the strictest conditions of secrecy and with great care. The celebratory christening ceremony for the new cohort is also planned, which will take place on November 15th at 7:30 p.m. on the Kulmleitenwiese in Puch.
The men who make the abacus follow a centuries-old tradition. They are committed to a strict regime, much like monks do. Only 1,444 bottles of the high-quality apple schnapps are distilled per vintage. This is made from the best apples of the respective vintage and ripens on clay bricks for at least a year. This approach ensures the high quality of the product, which will be offered to the first buyers at the ceremonial presentation.
The mysterious “apple men” from Puch meet regularly to discuss the best apple varieties, with taste always being the main focus. This close collaboration and the passion for their work make the abacus a unique product from Eastern Styria.
