Election results in Voitsberg: FPÖ prevails in the communities

On November 24, 2024, a new state parliament was elected in Styria, and there were some notable results in the Voitsberg district. The Freedom Party (FPÖ) was able to win the majority of votes in many communities, which indicates strong voter interest. The competition for governor was intense, particularly between Christopher Drexler of the ÖVP, Mario Kunasek of the FPÖ and Anton Lang of the SPÖ.

A decisive factor in this election was the withdrawal of Erwin Dirnberger, the ÖVP's long-time state parliament member. He left big shoes to fill, which Mayor Klaudia Stroißnig from Geistthal-Södingberg now wants to fill. The SPÖ also relied on local leaders, with Mayor Jochen Bocksruker from Bärnbach entering the race. Stefan Resch from Rosental was hoping for a seat in the state parliament for the FPÖ. In the background, the Greens and the KPÖ are going into this election with minimal chances of entering state representation, but have already zeroed in on the upcoming local council election in March 2025.

Eligible voters and voter turnout

In the Voitsberg district, a total of 41,458 people were eligible to vote, which represents a slight decrease compared to 2019, when 850 more voters were at the polls. However, within the entire constituency 3, which includes the Voitsberg, Deutschlandsberg and Leibnitz districts, the number of eligible voters increased to 158,916, which is almost 1,000 more than in the last election.

The previous elections in 2019 showed a clear dominance of the ÖVP, which won 36.05 percent of the vote, followed by the SPÖ with 23.02 percent and the FPÖ with 17.49 percent. This year, the outcome of the election will be particularly eagerly awaited as the political landscape has changed over the last few months and the distribution of votes needs to be reassessed.

Voters had the opportunity to cast their ballot, and despite the changes in the electorate, voter turnout and citizen engagement appear to remain a key theme in this election cycle.
