From the mill to fashion: local entrepreneurs are conquering the scene

In the picturesque region on the Wine Route, the Traussner Mühle in Ehrenhausen has developed into a fascinating attraction. Dieter Tatzl, the owner since 2016, is passionate about preserving this over 400-year-old cultural asset. He attaches great importance to the fact that the flour comes from sustainable production, with 70 percent of the grains used coming from the surrounding area. The rest comes from Burgenland and Lower Austria. In addition to tradition, the mill also offers its guests the opportunity to take part in baking courses and learn more about mill technology.

Another outstanding contribution to this regional heritage comes from the clothing maker Christa Franz from St. Ulrich in Greith. She celebrated her most exciting year in 2024 by presenting her creations at the most important fashion shows in the world. At Vienna Fashion Week she showed 20 elegant and distinctive dresses, followed by a brilliant performance at Milan Fashion Week, where she attracted the attention of leading fashion experts.

Innovations in crafts

In the area of luxury food production, Carmen and Werner Krauss are notable with their fine distillery “Distillery Krauss” in St. Martin in Sulmtal. After starting out in a small garage in 2007, they have established themselves as one of the world's most awarded distilleries. Their “Sulm Valley Whiskey” was named the best whiskey in the world at the World Spirits Championship in San Francisco in 2022. With the aim of becoming even better known in the USA, they recently started a collaboration with the grandchildren of film legend Charlie Chaplin to introduce the “Generation” brand.

Beyond traditional craftsmanship, Kathrin Stern and Rita Resch and their company sozKom in Krottendorf-Gaisfeld are committed to the development of social skills for people of all ages. Their philosophy is based on respectful and appreciative collaboration, which has earned them several awards, including the “Social Entrepreneur” and the Trigos in the employee initiative category.

In a completely different discipline, Reinhard Kleindl, an author and athlete from Söding, shines on many stages. He combines the worlds of the written word and high wire walking, proving himself to be a professional and becoming a best-selling author at the same time. His latest thriller “Chaos Code” and the award for the Austrian Research Foundation’s Science Journalism Prize demonstrate his multifaceted talent.

The developments in this region show a remarkable diversity. From traditional crafts to innovative fashion, social engagement and literary success, this area has become a melting pot of creativity and entrepreneurship. Each example is a testament to the dedication and innovative spirit of the people here, who are willing to preserve their heritage while breaking new ground to bring the region into the spotlight.
