Parliamentary Week: Alarming topics from cyber defense to child protection!

Important committee meetings are scheduled in the Austrian National Council on October 31, 2025. In the coming week, several committees will meet to discuss relevant issues that are of great importance to the political landscape. Among the upcoming topics of the Court of Auditors' Committee, the focus is on cyber defense and precautions against blackouts. In addition, the Human Rights Committee is discussing war crimes in Ukraine, as well as child protection, the planned EU-wide “chat control” and access to abortion. Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer recently submitted a report on correcting the excessive deficit to the EU Commission and the National Council, which is also expected to be discussed in the Budget Committee, as ots.at reports.

In addition, National Council President Walter Rosenkranz will pay an official visit to Morocco. A meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Control Committee for Europol will take place in Brussels on November 3rd and 4th, in which Austrian MPs will take part. Another important date is November 4th:

Important meetings on November 4th

A meeting of the Committee on Human Rights and Ombudsman is scheduled for the morning of Tuesday, November 4th. There will be a discussion with Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger. The coalition factions and the Greens will address the issues of human rights violations and war crimes in Ukraine. The Freedom Party in particular is calling for a comprehensive child protection package and is against “chat control”. The Greens are also pushing for the right to a legal abortion to be included in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.

At the same time, at 2 p.m., the Audit Committee will meet, which will deal with cyber defense, the 4th Panzergrenadier Brigade and precautions against blackouts. The debate will be supplemented by the participation of Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner. The day will be rounded off by the presentation of the a·g·e Awards in Parliament, which will take place at 5 p.m.

Other events in Parliament week

On November 6th there will be a meeting of the Federal Council members of the Children's Rights Committee in Graz with the child and youth advocate. A meeting of the Transport Committee and a discussion in the Interior Committee with the participation of Interior Minister Gerhard Karner are also scheduled for this day. A draft law to adapt the EU information systems is also being discussed in the Interior Committee. At 1 p.m., Minister for European Affairs from Finland, Joakim Strand, will visit Parliament.

The parliamentary week ends on November 7th, when the third President of the National Council, Doris Bures, takes part in the memorial event for the November pogroms of 1938 at 8:30 a.m. This week promises an intensive discussion about important issues that will significantly influence the direction of Austrian politics.
