Divorces in Styria: record low since 1986

A remarkable trend is emerging in Styria: the number of divorces has reached a historic low. In 2023, only 1,902 marriages ended in divorce, which is the lowest number since 1986. This development represents a significant indication of the stability of marriages in the region.

In addition to the falling divorce rate, the number of marriages also fell last year. After a peak in 2022, when many couples got married, the number of weddings has decreased to 6,351 in 2023. This corresponds to a decrease of 5.6% compared to the previous year.

The overall divorce rate is now 33.3%, meaning only about one in three marriages ends in divorce. This is an encouraging sign for couples and shows that the need for stable relationships still exists.

A look at the regional differences in marriages shows that the numbers were higher in urban areas, especially in Graz, than in rural regions. In Graz itself there were 1,584 marriages, which represents a slight decrease of 0.6% compared to the previous year. The Graz-Umwelt district followed with 864 marriages, which corresponds to a decrease of 7.1%.

These current statistics on natural population movements, compiled by the Styrian State Statistics Service, provide insight into the development of social trends in the region. One reason for interest in marriage could be the search for long-term and stable relationships, which seem increasingly valuable in today's fast-paced world.

The falling divorce rates and stable marriage rates could indicate a positive change in the social climate as more couples are willing to strengthen their bonds over the long term.
