Schlossbad am Wörthersee: Klagenfurt’s green vision becomes reality!

On April 25, 2025, an ambitious project for Klagenfurt was presented that could significantly change the Wörthersee shore. A dedicated team presented a concept for the former Schloss Hotel Wörthersee, which will not only serve as accommodation, but also represent a vision for sustainable and lively urban planning. This project is being financed privately and with a lot of passion, which shows the high level of commitment of those involved.

Klagenfurt is also planning to create a castle swimming pool, inspired by Graz’s Schlossberg. This initiative aims to enhance the region and inspire visitors to a sustainable experience concept at Lake Wörthersee. The proposal to establish a Schlossbad Wörthersee stop directly on the shore illustrates the innovative approach to urban planning. The idea of entering Vienna in swimming trunks and swimming at Lake Wörthersee could give rise to a new tourism concept for the region.

Sustainable vision for Klagenfurt

A central aspect of this project is the planned sauna with a view of the Karawanken, which combines the enjoyment of nature with a modern wellness experience. The entire concept is based on sustainable energy and future-oriented urban planning that takes into account the needs of citizens and the environment. Klagenfurt has also positioned itself as a European Green Capital finalist and could thus become a role model for other cities that focus on sustainability.

As part of the European Green Deal, which focuses on sustainability, walking, cycling and gardening, cities have the opportunity to present innovative solutions to combat environmental problems. The EU Commission launched the “European Green Capital” and “European Green Leaf Award” in 2008 to promote sustainable cities and publicize outstanding solutions. YouthEurope reports that winning cities act as “Green City Ambassadors”.

Challenges and solutions

Klagenfurt is well prepared for the award it is seeking, as the city aims to find long-term solutions to challenges such as air and water pollution and noise reduction. As part of the selection process for the award, cities must provide rigorous evidence of sustainable measures already achieved and planned. This happens in twelve assessment areas of environmental policy, ranging from waste management to climate change.

Through these initiatives, Klagenfurt could not only increase its attractiveness, but also set an example for the importance of sustainable urban development in Europe. Linking tourism and environmental protection could serve as a model for other cities that want to follow similar paths. Looking into the future promises a greener and more livable city for everyone.
