Plain Christmas Market: A magical Advent experience in Salzburg

The Christmas market in Maria Plain is a festive highlight during Advent and attracts not only locals but also visitors from near and far. Set in the picturesque setting of the pilgrimage church and with a breathtaking view over Salzburg, this market offers a special atmosphere that you won't quickly forget. The bright lights and the tempting scent of mulled wine and chestnuts invite you to linger while the festively decorated huts present regional delicacies.

From November 22nd to December 22nd, 2024 you can visit the market every weekend from Friday to Sunday. Opening times are Fridays from 4:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Saturdays from 2:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Sundays from 11:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. In the 17 handmade stalls you will not only find the famous Plainer Bosna, but also regional specialties such as Kaiserschmarrn, roasted almonds and gratinated alpine bread. A highlight is the veal bratwurst, which is made directly in the Gasthaus Maria Plain's in-house butcher shop, which increases its popularity even further.

Special events and Christmas atmosphere

The cultural events accompanied by music, including visits from St. Nicholas and traditional brass bands, contribute to the festive atmosphere. The enchanting view of the snow-covered city of Salzburg and the surrounding mountains is highlighted by a special photo spot that perfectly highlights the winter splendor. This means visitors can capture this wonderful scenery for eternity.

The Plain Christmas market has developed into an indispensable part of the Advent season in recent years. The unique location and the variety of culinary and craft offerings create an inviting atmosphere for young and old. The response is consistently positive, and visitors appreciate the combination of tradition and festive flair.

Tradition at the Gasthof Maria Plain

The Maria Plain inn looks back on a long history that dates back to the 15th century. Originally founded as Meierhof, the Plain pilgrimage was started in 1653 by Rudolf Baron von Grimming. Even today, this inn still plays a central role in village life and retains the charm of days gone by. The traditional restaurant is operated by the Moßhammer family, who have maintained and managed the property for over 15 generations.

Guests can look forward to regional delicacies in the pleasantly designed inn, most of which come from our own production. Among other things, the menu includes the Original Moßhammer’s Plainer Bratwurst, which is made according to an old family recipe. The friendly atmosphere and the cozy parlors create a loving setting for sociable meetings. The restaurant is open from Wednesday to Sunday and offers an atmospheric ambience.

In addition to the culinary experiences, guests can enjoy the hotel's stylishly furnished rooms, which are also part of the inn's facilities. Here, emphasis is placed on modern comfort and family well-being. Further accommodation and a wellness area are available in the nearby Plainstöckl apartment house. An extensive breakfast buffet is offered to hotel guests every morning, ensuring a good start to the day.

The Gasthaus Maria Plain is an ideal starting point for exploring the Mozart city of Salzburg and enjoying the wonders of the surrounding natural landscape. A walk to the pilgrimage basilica attracts many visitors who appreciate the history and the magnificent surroundings. By combining traditional hospitality and excellent regional food, the Maria Plain Christmas market remains a popular destination during Advent that captures the hearts of visitors.
