New life for the New Residence: construction project combines culture and nature
In the Salzburg state capital, the groundbreaking ceremony launched an extensive construction project in the New Residence. This project includes both the general renovation of the state and university's administrative areas as well as a significant expansion of the Salzburg Museum. In addition, a branch of the Vienna Belvedere, called “Belvedere Salzburg”, will be created, which will present both its own and shared collections. The architects responsible for this architectural project are the offices “Schenker Salvi Weber Architects” and “Eidos Architektur”.
The redesign of the area in the residence includes a variety of measures, in particular the redesign of the inner courtyard, which currently serves as a parking lot. In the future, this area will be car-free and converted into a park-like area. A central element will be a circular light fountain, which not only serves as a comfortable seating area, but also brings daylight into the lower levels of the museum.
Renewal of the inner courtyard
The inner courtyard of the New Residence will be reopened and given a completely renewed ambience. The arcades on the ground floor of the west wing will be restored and the entire area will serve as a public lounge. Exposed concrete plant bowls and shade trees will be added to make the environment more pleasant for visitors. In addition, access to the courtyards is planned via the mighty portals of Residenzplatz, Mozartplatz or Kaigasse, with the ticket area being placed in the entrance to the museum.
Visitors will be able to access the underground, newly designed exhibition areas arranged around the inner courtyard through a modern staircase. A multifunctional event room will be installed on the ground floor, which can host various events and will provide space for cultural events in the future. Construction completion of this ambitious project is scheduled for 2026. The opening of the Salzburg Museum and the “Belvedere Salzburg” will take place in the first half of 2027, with a total budget of 68 million euros for both projects.
The relevance of this construction project extends beyond the mere expansion of exhibition areas; a cultural center will also be created within the historic premises, which will benefit both locals and tourists.
