Free local transport on shopping Saturdays: strengthening trade in Salzburg
In a remarkable initiative, public transport in the city of Salzburg will be offered free of charge on the coming Saturdays during Advent. Mayor Bernhard Auinger from the SPÖ and the transport association have agreed on this measure to support local trade and offer citizens an easy way to buy their Christmas presents.
This campaign is not only a relief for those who like to shop, but also a step towards more environmentally friendly mobility. The city will invest a sum of around 100,000 euros and forego income from public transport. This could be interpreted as a positive signal for the local economy as the city plans to repeat similar measures in the future.
A safe route to the shops
Mayor Auinger emphasizes the value of this initiative: "We are doing this to promote sustainable mobility and to ensure enjoyable and safe market and business visits. Trips to family members and friends should also be free on these special days." Such free rides are not only a way to support local businesses, but also encourage environmentally conscious use of public transportation.
The decision to introduce this regulation comes at a time when many cities are trying to reduce car traffic in city centers and rely on sustainable transport solutions. By waiving fees for using buses and trains on these special Saturdays, the aim is to create an incentive for citizens to switch to local public transport.
