Road safety: Children learn with truck workshops in Zwettl
The WKNÖ campaign brings students from the Zwettl Private Elementary School closer to knowledge about trucks and road safety. Workshops with Brantner Dürr promote safety and a sense of responsibility in road traffic.

Road safety: Children learn with truck workshops in Zwettl
In autumn 2024, the Lower Austrian freight transport industry will continue its successful campaign, which aims to give students important knowledge about trucks and, above all, road safety. The visit to the private elementary school in Zwettl marked a further step in this important educational project, which has now reached far-reaching dimensions.
A central aspect of this initiative is to raise children's awareness of the importance of trucks in everyday life. Many students are unaware that a significant portion of the food they consume is transported by truck. In addition, the strict emissions standards that apply to trucks are discussed in order to promote an understanding of environmentally friendly transport.
Practicality and safety
During this special workshop, the children came into direct contact with a truck from Brantner Dürr. Alexander Dürr and the workshop leader Elke Winkler led the fourth grade through various learning stations where the focus was on the topic of “safety in road traffic”. The students had the opportunity to experience live what the stopping distance of a truck looks like and what safety precautions are important.
With the help of floor markings, traffic cones and practical exercises, the children were able to check the visibility from the driver's cab themselves. Particularly exciting: Some had the opportunity to sit behind the wheel of the truck for a moment - a highlight that aroused the children's enthusiasm.
“We cannot maintain our standard of living without the transport industry, so road safety, especially for children and young people, is an important concern for us,”
remarked Markus Fischer, the specialist group chairman of the Lower Austrian freight transport industry in the Lower Austrian Chamber of Commerce. In doing so, he emphasizes the relevance of this educational work.
At the end of the workshop, the school received a certificate from Alexander Dürr that recognized it as an “institution that particularly cares about the road safety of its students.” This recognition is the result of an ongoing commitment that has grown steadily, especially since the launch of this initiative in 2016.
Another notable aspect of the campaign is the expansion to middle schools since May 2019, allowing even more students to be reached. In total, almost 10,400 children have so far taken part in this important educational project, which not only addresses road safety, but also provides insights into the world of trucks and their essential role in society.
