Flood relief: New support for affected children and kindergartens

The recent flood events in large parts of the country have not only caused damage, but have also increased the emotional pressure on many children. Such extraordinary situations are often difficult to process, especially for little ones. For this reason, Family Regional Councilor Christiane Teschl-Hofmeister has now launched a so-called “pedagogical toolbox” that was designed specifically for affected kindergarten teams.

This toolbox is intended to help educators support children in coping with their experiences. “The elementary educators did amazing things during the flood disaster, even under the circumstances that many of them were personally affected,” explained Teschl-Hofmeister. An important part of the toolbox is a podcast hosted by crisis intervention expert, university professor Dr. Barbara Juen, was created. In addition, special materials are available to educators, which are made available on a digital “Padlet”.

Individual support for kindergartens

In addition to the general materials, there are also individual support offers for the affected kindergartens. This includes telephone consultations or direct on-site visits by educational consultants and kindergarten inspectors. These measures are essential to offer the affected facilities and their teams the necessary support in these challenging times. “The acute team and the Red Cross are at our side as important cooperation partners,” added Teschl-Hofmeister.

The initiative aims to strengthen children's coping mechanisms and support educators in their important role. The state councilor hopes that the new “educational toolbox” will provide better preparation and support when children are confronted with the consequences of such natural disasters. Providing such resources is critical to meeting the emotional and psychological demands that such events bring.
